According to American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall, something needs to be done to turn the farm economy around. “We’re talking about the security of our nation being able to feed ourselves,” said Duvall. “I think we’re at a critical stage where people have to understand that whatever we do, whether it’s really good trade treaties, whether it’s more domestic use, whatever that might be, we got to find a way to secure agriculture for the future.” Assistance is being sought, but Duvall said that’s not a long-term solution. “Farmers don’t want a check in the mail from the federal government; we want markets.”
