A new report from the Surface Transportation Board highlights an increase in planned grain rail car capacity for the harvest season. BNSF Railway has 29,000 active grain cars, up four percent from last year. During peak harvest, BNSF plans to match last year’s number of shuttle trains at 140. Canadian Pacific Kansas City plans to have 140 dedicated grain trains across its U.S.-Canada network during the peak of harvest. That’s 40 more than last year. Union Pacific has 3,900 active locomotives, up 100 from the fall of 2024. UP plans to operate 80 shuttle or unit trains during peak harvest.
