Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association Executive Director Harrison Weber says there were some positive provisions in the new USDA school lunch standards. “As commodity producers, we always want to see our products included in those programs. There are some improvements that we’ve felt were made, but there’s still definitely some concerns.” The rule does not restrict low and no-calorie artificial sweeteners. “If you target one area, you’ve got to treat all sweeteners the same. This is another example where artificial sweeteners can have a leg up on a naturally produced and naturally occurring sweetener.”
