One way to improve next year’s corn is to take a good look at the crop before harvest and let it tell you the weaknesses. “Every crop runs out of some resource, and that’s why it doesn’t yield as much,” says McGillicuddy – Corrigan Agronomics independent agronomist John McGillicuddy. “If you can identify the resources that are the most critical to production, then you’ve got a better chance of addressing that problem.” As for the overall U.S. corn crop, McGillicuddy isn’t sure this will be a record year. “We had excellent growing conditions through the entire month of July and August. This year, that’s not at all been the case. We’ve had limited sunshine, we’re mature and early, we shortened the growing season and we have a lot more stalk rot disease. It doesn’t have the pieces to make a record crop, but that’s just my opinion.”
