A group of 15 senators is asking Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to address a “22-year mega-drought” that is threatening farmers and ranchers across the West. The lawmakers contend many existing USDA programs do not meet the needs of Western agriculture. Vilsack is being asked to use his authority to conserve water and protect lands hurt by the drought. Additional staffing in USDA field offices is also on the wish list.
