Much of North Dakota, South Dakota and northern Minnesota are beyond the final planting date for corn. Based in McVille, North Dakota, Ihry Insurance agent Reed Ihry says a few of the farmers he works with will continue planting corn until the next rain event. “After that, farmers will stop planting corn and possibly try to plant wheat or barley on fertilized ground or soybeans if the ground hasn’t been fertilized,” says Ihry. “Two farmers told me a half section of their fields initially planned for corn will move into prevent plant.” Ihry says farmers are starting to plant the crops in southern Nelson and Griggs Counties in North Dakota, but it’s nip-and-tuck. “One field can get planted and other cannot. Many farmers are undecided about how to approach the wet conditions. Plans are changing. We went from plan A to plan C in a hurry.”
