Beef cow numbers are increasing in the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest. Steiner Consulting Group Head Economist Altin Kalo says the weather has a lot to do with it. “We’ve had significant losses in the central part of the country due to the drought and the pricing has been favorable especially for some of the feeder cattle in the last six months or so. The producers that have the ability to grow, have been able to grow.” Kalo says there’s just been a disconnect between the wholesale beef price and the price the cattle producers are receiving.
