More details of USDA’s trade assistance funding will be released in the next few weeks. Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee Chairman John Hoeven explains why $12 billion is offered. “The administration estimates the impact of the retaliatory trade measures that have been put in place by our trading partners as it affects agriculture is about $11 billion-plus and that’s that’s why the $12 billion amount is what’s included in this program. This is really designed to help our farmers and ranchers through the period while these trade negotiations are going on.” Hoeven says the real solution to this problem is access to markets and there’s hope the North American Free Trade Agreement will be completed in early fall.
