African Swine Fever continues to spread in the Dominican Republic. “The Dominican Republic is close; a lot closer than China, Europe or Africa where ASF has been endemic for a while,” said Dr. Jerry Torrison, veterinarian, University of Minnesota. “It is also important to remember the Dominican Republic has had Classical Swine Fever, also known as hog cholera, for a long, long time and that hasn’t made it in (to the U.S.); I would argue that is potentially a bigger risk because we won’t recognize it as readily.” Torrison recommends swine farmers review their biosecurity plans and make adjustments to prevent the spread of any disease, but the issue of ASF must be “put into perspective.” .
