North Dakota has a cow herd that is just shy of one-million head. Pleasant Lake, North Dakota rancher Scott Shively spoke at the town hall meeting in Rugby and said the drought could result in a dramatic plunge in those numbers. “Realistically, if something doesn’t break in a really big way, we’re going to be at about one-third of that next year.” Shively says ranchers are in survival mode. “Every day this carries on, we need a bigger miracle than we did the day before.”
