Many farmers planted into colder than average soil this year, which can often translate into early season stress. However, there are options to improve plant viability. Compass Minerals Plant Nutrition field representative Marissa Mann says a telltale sign in this type of planting situation are micronutrient deficiencies like zinc and manganese. “A few other things include stunted or slow to grow corn, and also having a poor or short end regrowth system. Later in the season, this equate to having a weakened plant foundation. So, as we spoon feed nutrients throughout the season, we ensure the crop has available access to nutrients during peak demand.” The most important nutrients for mitigating plant stress are zinc and boron.
