Early reports indicate spotty damage from last week’s frost and freezes. In Hurdsfield, North Dakota, farmer Jeff Mertz says there appears to be frost damage in soybeans, but not in corn. “The durum seems to be alright, too. Dry conditions have a greater impact on durum.” Temperatures near Rolla reached 24 degrees Friday, but farmer Doyle Lentz says it didn’t seem to impact his crops too bad. “The canola was very small and soybeans were pushing through. Maybe on the darker soil we got away with it. We were surprised.” Lentz says soybeans were at the right growing stage to get damage. “North of Rolla, there were soybeans looking tough.” Agronomists are encouraging farmers to wait a few days before replanting, because crops can recover.
