In mid-April, a widespread freeze hit winter wheat growing areas in Kansas. Kansas Wheat Commission CEO Justin Gilpin thinks the crop escaped any major damage. “We are hearing reports in southern and central Oklahoma where the wheat may have been headed at the time. This could have damaged the crop, but for the most part, the freeze event in Kansas may be more localized.” Attention is shifting to the dry conditions in the Southern Plains. Gilpin is watching the dryness in the Northern Plains, too. “Everyone knows the severity of the situation the Northern Plains is dealing with and the drought monitor. What makes it different in the Southern Plains is we had a wet March. Conditions improved, but since March, we really haven’t had significant rains. Dryness is becoming a concern for this area.”
