Based on U.S. Drought Monitor data, USDA estimates 75 percent of total spring wheat production falls within a drought area. That includes 98 percent in North Dakota, 62 percent of South Dakota and 36 percent of Minnesota. Eighty-eight percent of North Dakota’s corn production and 55 percent in South Dakota are in a drought area. For soybeans, 94 percent of North Dakota and 55 percent of South Dakota production areas are in drought. Nationwide, 92 percent of sunflower, 91 percent of durum and 50 percent of barley production areas are experiencing drought.
