Former House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson thinks Robert Bonnie will do well as the USDA’s Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation. Peterson worked with Bonnie in the Obama Administration. “We thought he was knowledgeable, very easy to work with and forthcoming. I started the dialogue with him again three months ago.” Peterson, who is now a consultant with Combest, Sell and Associates, says Bonnie understands the needs of a practical climate change solution for agriculture. “Whether it’s using the Conservation Reserve Program, a program that probably sequesters more carbon than any other thing the USDA has done or could do, or the Conservation Stewardship Program, climate solutions will come out of that agency. They’ve told me climate won’t be a regulatory thing and it will be done through voluntary programs.”
