Spring fertilizer prices may bring sticker shock, but NDSU Extension Soil Specialist Dave Franzen says revised fertilizer recommendations for soybeans may be a bright spot for local farmers. “We decreased the critical soil test level to about half of what it was before. If you have soil test levels at seven parts per million or higher, you don’t need phosphate at all. It won’t pay you back. Even more important, a lot of farmers put phosphate down with the soybean seed. We strongly discourage that, because it can lead to a yield reduction.” Franzen says NDSU Extension’s nitrogen calculator can help farmers make better fertilizer decisions for corn. Franzen was on a panel during the Northern Corn and Soybean Expo last week.
