There’s limited snowfall across the Northern Plains this winter. NDSU Extension State Climatologist Adnan Akyuz says out west, the ground is bare. Farmers rely on snowfall like a savings account. “Unfortunately, western North Dakota doesn’t have anything in the savings account. In fact, if we are looking at October through January in the current conditions, North Dakota as a whole is in its third driest year. Farmers have reason to believe there should be something happening in the winter and spring. If it doesn’t happen, farmers will be in trouble.” The Climate Prediction Center’s spring forecast is La Nina heavy. “If I had money to bet, I’d put all of my money in a warmer-than-normal spring, but when it comes to precipitation, that’s a little tricky.”
