Congress has introduced legislation to create new direct-to-consumer options for livestock producers, processors and small meat markets. The Direct Interstate Retail Exemption for Certain Transactions, or DIRECT, Act would amend retail exemptions to allow state-inspected meat products to be sold across state lines through e-commerce. This would open the door for more direct marketing options for both producers and local processors. The bill would not compromise federal food safety standards or market access under existing trade agreements. It was introduced by South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson and is supported by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, U.S. Cattlemen’s Association, American Sheep Industry Association, American Farm Bureau Federation and others.
