Discussions between the Canada and China governments brought up questions in the past few days of China allowing imports of Canadian canola seed. According to the Canola Council of Canada vice president of government affairs Brian Innes, there was a lot of uncertainty around what was actually happening. “We do know that our exports can continue in the way they have in the recent past with the added restriction that all of our canola seed exports have to be less than one percent in foreign material or dockage.” Innes says that means there has been no change in the trade spat with China. “We’ve been disappointed as a canola industry, because we haven’t seen a real way to help resolve the current situation. It remains a major focus for us to get the canola seed back to China. It’s been a challenge, because we haven’t seen any evidence that would justify the actions of them blocking our canola one year ago.”
