Despite the challenges of 2018 and 2019, sugarbeet growers are showing some optimism about the upcoming planting season. Raymond, Minnesota farmer and American Sugarbeet Growers Association Vice President Nate Hultgren says there are some shares changing hands in the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative area. “We’ve had some new growers and young growers step in. It’s been an opportunity, because share values have been down,” says Hultgren. “You can lease shares for practically nothing this year. It’s more of an indication of where we’ve been than where we’re going. I think the 2020 outlook is strong. Stocks to use is at a 20 year low.” Hultgren says that means the sugar prices should increase. “We have seen the rebound after the freeze up in the Red River Valley. As a grower, I’m trying to find more shares, because I think there is a real opportunity to play catch up with the strong sugar market this year.”
