Five months ago, the Britton, South Dakota area was receiving it’s first major snow storm. That was on top of an extremely wet growing season. C Bar J Ranch owner Ryan Hastings says, surprisingly, most of the corn acres got put in the bin in a timely manner. “On our farm, the crop was 20-to-21 percent moisture with a test weight of 53-to-54 pounds. We were very happy with how things turned out given the year.” Virtually zero fall fieldwork was done in the area. While that creates more work for this planting season, Hastings says it doesn’t necessarily change cropping plans. Beyond preparing for spring planting, Hastings is also tending to bison steer calves in the feedlot and will start calving in about a month. “Right now we have about 600 buffalo on feed and basically just trying to keep the lots bedded. The pens are starting to shape up as the weather gets nicer.” Listen to the RRFN story.
