The Minnesota House Agriculture, Food Finance and Policy Division also learned more about hemp production in Thursday’s hearing. “We are trying to work on a state plan we can submit hopefully before the end of this fall and get it approved where farmers can start operating under the USDA rule,” explained Anthony Cortilet, a hemp program supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. “The Drug Enforcement Administration has a lot of involvement in the rule and that’s a sticking point. We’re working with them on all of these issues, too. It’s sort of hard for us to plan and know what this looks like in the next few months.” Cortilet answered questions on hemp market potential. He said hemp infrastructure needs improvement in the state. “I’m interested to see what happens this year now that prices are leveling out or declining a bit. Maybe that will give us breathing room to establish more processing to help farmers.”
