What does a late spring mean for a farmer’s crop insurance policy? Beth Erickson is an insurance specialist at AgCountry Farm Credit Services, serving the Morris/Alexandria, Minnesota area. When it comes to final plant dates, Erickson says the concern at this point is to get the corn planted. “We’ve had a little bit of rain in the area, so that’s making some farmers nervous. May 31 is the final plant date for corn,” says Erickson. “As you move further north into Cass, Mahnomen, Red Lake and Roseau counties, it’s going to be May 25. Soybeans are a little later, June 10, which isn’t as much of a concern.” As a part of a Multi-Peril crop insurance plan, Prevent Plant could potentially pay a claim for farmers unable to get crop in due to rain or other cause of loss. As final plant dates approach, Erickson encourages farmers to keep in touch with their insurance agent. Farmers should see their county special provisions for plant dates specific to their area.
