Both too much and not enough moisture is creating a challenging growing season for farmers in the Northern Plains. Based at Langford, South Dakota, Dairyland Seed District Sales Manager Keith Rekow says weed control is one concern, especially in wet soils. The other is fertility. “At V3-V5, we should be looking at ear length and girth and do tissue sampling to determine what type of nutrition is needed,” says Rekow. “Also evaluating your stands and do some additional fertility on your better field, as some nitrogen may have moved out of the soil profile.” Farmers should be one the lookout for pests in corn and soybeans. “Cutworms have been developing in corn, and I’ve already seen bean leaf beetle in the soybeans.”
