Syngenta Senior Lead of Federal Government Relations Mary Kay Thatcher says there are a few things holding up progress of the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement. “Part of the USMCA said Mexico has to pass a new labor law. The lower body of the Mexican Congress did that. They think the upper body will pass it this upcoming week,” says Thatcher. “There are several hurdles and with the USMCA, it seems like we’re running against deadlines. There will be a change in Canadian leadership in October and there’s a focus on the next U.S. presidential election.” Getting the USMCA ratified quickly will be important for the U.S. “I think there are lots of people who believe we will need to pass the USMCA and potentially get something done on China before others think we’re good trading partners. It is precedent setting.” Lawmakers are in recess, but will return to Washington D.C. the week of April 29.
