The National Farmers Union adopted policy priorities for the year ahead and approved eight special orders of business during their annual convention. Labeling lab grown meat is one of the special orders. NFU will ask the Department of Agriculture to create a USDA stamp or marking lab-grown products with a different color ink. South Dakota Farmers Union delegate Tammy Basel said it’s not the new technology that’s a problem, but consumers need to know what is in their food. “To me, it’s very misleading when something is grown in a lab and they want to disguise it as a product coming from an animal like meat,” Basel explains. “I think it’s important we know what we’re eating.” Other special orders of business highlight climate change, dairy inventory management, renewable fuels, farm labor, the farm safety net, market concentration and trade.
