Washington analyst Jim Wiesemeyer says the midterm election results could influence the direction of U.S. agricultural trade policy. Wiesemeyer pointed to energy costs and trade tensions with Canada as potential factors affecting voters in several states. “Probably Trump’s trade policy with Canada had something to do with it,” Wiesemeyer said, referring to Republican election losses in key states. With Democrats preparing to take control of Congress, Wiesemeyer says the election could also influence how the administration approaches international relations. “Now we’re gonna see how the Democrats are gonna govern in Congress and how Trump is going to govern with a weakened hand,” Wiesemeyer said. He says the response from major trading partners, including China, will be another development to watch.
