A U.S. International Trade Commission hearing is scheduled for Friday to consider the impact of lamb meat imports on the U.S. sheep and lamb industry. R-CALF USA has filed a pre-hearing brief with ITC, saying the increased lamb imports have threatened the domestic industry. While lamb prices have strengthened, R-CALF argues that a smaller flock and a drop-off in production capacity are responsible. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard describes this situation as ‘the canary in the coalmine for U.S. cattle producers’ because that industry is following the same path and needs to recognize the warning.
