National 4-H Week is highlighting opportunities for young people that extend well beyond livestock and the show ring. South Dakota State 4-H Ambassador Bailey Bender said the organization has helped build her leadership skills. “My number one value in 4-H is how confident I have become in myself,” Bender said. “Everything that you can do or think of, there’s something in 4-H that you can enter it in and talk about it passionately.” Bender said one misconception is that members must come from farms or have livestock. “4-H is so much more than just animals.” 4-H Week celebrations include a skills competition for teenage members and SDSU ice cream at her local school. Throughout this week, the Red River Farm Network is highlighting special stories from the 4-H program. RRFN’s National 4-H Week celebration is sponsored by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, Associated Milk Producers, Incorporated, North Dakota Corn Utilization Council, AgCountry Farm Credit Services and the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council.
