Milk production in the 24 major dairy states totaled 19.2 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from August. Milk production rose 2.1 percent in Minnesota and 8.4 percent in South Dakota. The gopher state added 6,000 more cows to the state dairy herd in the past year, while South Dakota brought 19,000 more cows into production.
