To appease cattle ranchers upset with his recent decision to import foreign ground beef, President Donald Trump issued new executive orders to support the cattle sector. The executive orders include plans to address packer consolidation and other issues important to the cattle industry. “This order also will require country of origin labeling across all foreign beef.” For context, the executive order does not implement mandatory country of origin labeling but directs USDA and other agencies to review that issue over the next 90 days. Trump was asked about the source of the lean beef trimmings that will be imported at low tariff rates. “Right now, it’s primarily Argentina, Brazil, but there could be other countries.”
