The Red River Watershed Management Board is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The focus has always been on flood mitigation. Executive Director Rob Sip said the RRWMB and partner boards are now looking at ways to utilize water in the future. “For example, flood water for livestock drinking, crop irrigation, sub-irrigation, fighting fires and other uses like that water for spraying crops.” In the spring, farmers and landowners don’t want flooding. “It gets sent north and they don’t want it either, so how can we use that water for the future?” RRWMB, Minnesota Watersheds, Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources and Red River Basin Commission met this past week in Detroit Lakes.
