Barley harvest is underway in portions of east-central North Dakota, with the hot and dry growing season showing up in early results. Jim Broten, who farms in northern Barnes and southern Griggs counties, said the heat cut the crop back a little bit. “It’s nice bright barley, but the yield isn’t quite as good as we normally get.” Test weights are also running lighter, although protein levels have been acceptable. Broten says rainfall has been extremely variable. “We were fortunate to get rain in parts of the farm, so some of it looks pretty good and then some of it’s a little on the dry side.”
