Despite ongoing dry weather across much of the Cornbelt, Hefty Seed agronomist Jacob Gubbels said improved management practices are helping crops withstand stress. Speaking during the Ag PhD Field Day, Gubbels said today’s crop performance is as much a reflection of better farming practices as improved genetics. He encouraged growers not to cut corners on weed management despite tighter profit margins. “Weed control is always one of the top topics, but there is still the old habits of spraying late or trying to save a dollar or two,” said Gubbels. “That’s one area that can’t be overlooked.”
