NDSU Extension Cropping Systems Specialist Jeff Stachler calls for patience before making management decisions following a hailstorm. “If somebody has hail insurance, they must follow what the hail adjuster says, regardless of what it looks like,” said Stachler. “Many times, the hail adjusters will not zero it out and will make them take it to harvest.” If badly damaged fields remain in production, weed control becomes an important consideration. “Soybeans are about the only crop that we still have some time to make some herbicide applications in, as needed.” Stachler also encouraged growers to give soybeans time before determining whether a stand will recover.
