Access to land is becoming increasingly challenging for farmers and ranchers. A report from Farm Bureau Market Intel said nearly 80 percent of the rented farmland is controlled by non-operating landlords. More than one-third of those landlords are 75 years of age or older. That demographic owns over 40 percent of the rented acreage. The report said farmland may become more difficult to access if heirs choose different lease terms or accept competing offers from development, energy or other non-farm uses.
