Colorado Senator Michael Bennet surprisingly lost his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. However, that may put him in line for another key position. The current Senate agriculture committee ranking member, Amy Klobuchar, is running for governor in Minnesota. The next two Democrats with the most seniority on the committee are Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Minnesota Senator Tina Smith, who are both retiring. That could put Bennet in line for the job. If Bennet had left the Senate, there was speculation New Jersey Senator Cory Booker would be the top Democrat on the ag committee.
