Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins traveled to Mexico over the weekend to open a new sterile fly production facility aimed at stopping the spread of New World screwworm. “The United States and Mexico began working on this project nearly a year ago. Once complete, this site will produce an additional 60 million to 100 million sterile New World screwworm flies per week,” Rollins said during an appearance on Fox News. Since the beginning of the month, 27 cases of New World screwworm have been reported in the United States.
