Mary-Dell Chilton led the team that created the first transgenic plants, which led to glyphosate and numerous industry breakthroughs. When it comes to plant science, it’s been said Chilton ‘rewrote the playbook.’ She joined a Syngenta legacy company, CIBA-Geigy, in 1983 and went on to become Syngenta’s vice president of agricultural biotechnology and principal scientist. This agricultural trailblazer died June 24th at the age of 87. Her numerous honors included the World Food Prize in 2013 and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2020.
