Nitrogen remains one of the most important and challenging nutrients for farmers to manage. “Nitrogen is the nutrient that generally provides the biggest crop response and is required in the largest amounts,” said Alan Blaylock, senior agronomist, Nutrien. “It’s also the trickiest to manage because it’s strongly influenced by weather events and soil conditions. Nitrogen is mobile in the soil and can be lost in several different ways when conditions are favorable.” Blaylock said proper timing, placement and management can help producers improve nitrogen efficiency and protect profitability.
