Abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions are beginning to show up in western North Dakota, but ranchers are not yet making major herd reductions. Beach, North Dakota rancher Donnie Feiring said pasture conditions remain adequate for now. “The part we’re more concerned with right now is where the hay is going to come from because of the shortness of hay. The alfalfa doesn’t look like it’s going to be an overabundance of a crop in our area.” Farring encouraged young producers to remain proactive during dry periods. “Keep looking ahead and counting your grazing days,” he said. “Keep adjusting and make sure your pastures get enough rest, repair and recovery time before you come back to them.”
