Keith Alverson says dry, windy weather created difficult planting conditions this spring. “We had a lot more dust moving around than any farmer would like to see,” Alvinson said. “Our planting conditions were pretty powdery.” Alverson said fluctuating temperatures also caused uneven crop emergence. “I think we will have a small impact on the crop due to some stand loss.” Dry conditions may also limit herbicide performance. “Pre-emerge herbicides are having a tough time getting activated just due to the lack of moisture and cold temps.” Alverson is based at Chester in southeastern South Dakota.
