Sugarbeet growers across the Red River Valley should closely monitor early-season insect pressure as crop emergence continues. NDSU Extension Entomologist Mark Boetel says seedling fields face increased risk from pests such as cutworms, springtails and wireworms. “Earlier planted fields are going to be more at risk because they’re one of the few green things out there.” Boetel also noted root maggot populations rebounded in several areas in 2025, increasing concern for the 2026 growing season. Monitoring programs involving NDSU, Minn-Dak and American Crystal Sugar Company will continue fly counts three times per week.
