The farm bill debate blurred some of the traditional party-line policy positions. A pesticide labeling provision maintaining support for the federal regulatory system over state courts was rejected, brought down a coalition that included MAHA Moms and the advocates for states’ rights. Policy Solutions President Jay Truitt also points to market consolidation, which would have been a Democratic talking point in the past. “There’s a pretty good number of the Republican caucus that is even more focused on concentration and power amongst companies. Right now, fertilizer probably is at the top, but we saw just a couple of months ago, the discussions over what’s going on in the beef industry and maybe some other segments of the meat industry as well. Yeah, I think the dynamic has shifted.” These issues have flipped the script from the past. “It could be just that the parties have shifted, right? Everyone has kind of shifted a little bit left, and so now you find a bunch of Republicans in the spots where the old Blue Dogs used to be.” Listen to the interview.
