It has been a spring with very little field activity. CHS Regional Agronomy Specialist Tim Swanson says, fortunately, most fields were left in good condition last fall and will be ready to go when the weather cooperates. In addition to the cold, wet soil, farmers are dealing with high input costs. Swanson encourages growers to consider all options. “We’ve got the traditional nitrogen stabilizers, phosphorus stabilizers; we’ve got some different chelated products that help reduce that tie-up and keep those nutrients free,” said Swanson. “And with these new biologicals, bio-stimulants, and things that are coming on that really, in a lot of cases, help with stress mitigation, products that are built for weather just like this, the cold, maybe wet soils that we’re going to deal with, and just give those emerging plants the best footing to stand on.” Swanson advises farmers not to cut rates when applying weed control.
