Sugarbeet growers are facing mounting pressure from falling prices, rising imports, and ongoing policy uncertainty, creating what industry leaders describe as a critical moment for the sector. “We’ve got a lot of things going all at the same time, prices are down, we’ve got imports that are coming in that are pushing those prices down, so it’s really tough,” said Luther Markwart, CEO and executive vice president, American Sugarbeet Growers Association. “We’ve got to get a farm bill done, because farmers really, really need it.” Markwart says strengthening the farm safety net is a top priority, including raising the loan rate and implementing policy tools to address trade imbalances. He warns that increased imports are undercutting domestic production and depressing prices, adding urgency to the situation. “This town (Washington, D.C.) doesn’t do anything until there’s a crisis and we are in fact in a crisis.”
