The push continues in Washington as the House prepares to take up the farm bill, but key hurdles remain before final passage. National Farmers Union President Rob Larew says progress is being made, though significant work still lies ahead. “I think maybe that’s the safest way to say it, is that we’re getting closer, but clearly there’s still a long way to go to get this thing completely across the finish line,” Larew said. “We certainly do see it as positive that we’re going to have consideration here in the House.” Larew says priorities for Farmers Union include year-round E15, country of origin labeling, and stronger support to address rising input costs. He warns that current economic conditions could worsen without meaningful policy changes. “If we are looking for a farm bill that is going to meet the moment right now, it’s got to address the big increase in input costs,” he said, adding that next year could bring even greater challenges for producers. He also points to global instability and trade tensions as added pressure on the farm economy. Larew says farmers are looking for clarity and results as policymakers work toward a final bill.
