Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins was part of a groundbreaking event for the new sterile fly production facility at Moore Air Base in Edinburg, Texas. Rollins took a cautious approach. “I want to be very, very clear, the New World Screwworm is only around 200 miles from this border, so there will not be a port opening in Texas until that significantly pushes back.” However, the Texas Department of Agriculture reported this past week that the parasite has been detected just 90 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border at Nuevo Leon.
