The current economic landscape has many farmers shifting acres to soybeans this spring. Agvise Soil Scientist John Breker says there are some things to consider when making this move. “With nitrogen fertilizer prices where they are, more people are thinking about soybean acres, and I just like to remind folks that soybeans do have their own nutrient requirements.” Soybean Cyst Nematode remains the top issue for soybean farmers throughout the Northern Plains. “Knowing what the SCN egg count is lets you know if it’s okay to plant a regular soybean variety, if you need to switch to a resistant variety, or, in some cases, where the egg counts have gotten so high, the university guidance says don’t plant soybeans on those acres. So, that type of information will help people make their best variety decisions.”
