With the dominance of the corn/soybean rotation, forage crops, like sorghum, have gone by the wayside. CROPLAN Alfalfa and Forage Specialist Jeff Jackson sees benefits for bringing sorghum back to the rotation. Sorghum can be grown in the far north, but a shorter growing season and cooler conditions can lead to harvestability issues. Jackson is also a fan of triticale as a forage crop. “Triticale, for me, is a fantastic option because we’re always looking for that winter cereal that can cover the acres, hold the dirt in place over winter,” said Jackson. “Having a living root in the system over the fall and winter, triticale is great for that and, by the way, we can make some fantastic feed in the spring.” Jackson was a speaker at the Central Plains Dairy Expo.
